$431,500 settlement involving automobile accident
CHESHIRE - Kathleen Bishop and her son, Jesse, have received settlements totaling $431,500 for injuries they received in an accident that killed the driver at fault. The settlement is significant but justified, because the crash left Kathleen Bishop with severe facial injuries and such emotional distress she was forced to close the dried flower shop business she ran at Bishop's Farm, said her lawyer, Michael Foley Jr. Bishop's husband owns the farm. "She's doing better and is back on her feet, but she really lost everything because of this accident," Foley said. Bishop couldn't be reached for comment. The accident occurred March 9, 1994, when Bishop was driving west on Route 68 in Wallingford about 8 a.m. According to police, Michael Calderoni, 27, of Southington was traveling east on Route 68 when his car crossed the center line into Bishop's path near Ryan Drive. Bishop's Blazer hit Calderoni's car, causing her and her son to hit the windshield, police reported. Calderoni was killed. Foley said $50,000 of the settlement for Kathleen Bishop and $21,500 for Jesse Bishop carne from Calderoni's insurance company. Foley also filed a claim against Bishop!s insurer seeking settlement under the policy's underinsured motorist policy. The claim against her insurer, Hartford Fire Insurance Co., was scheduled for a trial this month, but the carrier settled the day before jury selection was to begin, Foley said.
